Fernando Melo picked the petals off a sunflower head and held its face flesh against the grill. Was I at a cookout, I wondered, or had NOMA come to Philly?
The People’s Kitchen, a grassroots collaborative combating food insecurity by making free meals for all, hosted their own kind of cookout Friday night at their Community Farm on Reinhard street. And let me tell you — it wasn’t just hot dogs and hamburgers.

West Oakland is widely known as a food desert, vast stretches of it devoid of any victuals outside of corner-store fare. And don’t get me wrong — as a foot-bound resident I am endlessly grateful to those purveyors of overpriced seltzer water (when it’s in stock, that is) and emergency bags of sugar to feed my Very Hungry Kombucha. But affordable and healthy food is hard to come by on near every stretch that is not 7th and Mandela, which houses the sweetest co-op around.
Small but mighty may be the neighborhood businesses’ calling card, though, as some of these businesses have been serving their publics for 10 or 15 years, in the cases of coffee shop Kilovolt and Mandela, respectively. Give us something good and we’ll stay loyal. Okay, give us something and we’ll be there.

Thirsty, not a little sweaty, and determined to fill up on some fried and salty food: a perfect recipe for enjoying an evening at West Oakland’s successful new-ish night market, now in its fourth month.

I just know a burger hate to see me comin’.
Though not on the level of a George Motz, I consider myself a bit of a burger historian. I’ve been to the longhorn pastures of Meers’ Burger and the onion-fried mecca of Sid’s Diner in El Reno, and am very annoying on Facebook when In-N-Out is mentioned. In 2017 I ate at all six Lot-A-Burgers in Tulsa for an article in The Tulsa Voice, and subsequently won a journalism award for my efforts.

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Long Beach
Aug. 31 – Sept. 2, 2024
In the Aquatic Capital of America™, it’s easy to gaze seaward and visualize the lifestyles of ancient Mediterranean empires. Before the destructive Spanish arrived in the 16th century, the thriving Gabrielino-Tongva locals utilized maritime routes to trade between the scattered Channel Islands, paralleling the Phoenician sea-merchant empire 7,000 miles away. Today, you can hop on a ferry to horizon-dominating enclaves like Catalina to buy wares, eat seafood, and dodge vicious beasts, then head back to your wife and son, all on an odyssey spanning far less than a decade. From the water, you’ll see coastal bluffs descending to bustling man-made ports, dramatically reemerging as dynamic cliffs that wrap around San Pedro and the commanding Olympus of Palos Verdes, as late winter’s enigmatic fog licks dry rocks until they crumble to coves below — then Scylla flings your skiff into the breakwater, and the Coast Guard arrives to slay her, all in a day’s work.
As someone heavily influenced by Edith Hamilton’s Mythology (1942) but lacking present-day Hellenic acquaintances, I couldn’t resist attending the annual Long Beach Greek Festivalfundraiser to learn more.

The façades of Trenton Avenue’s 300 block, particularly on the east side — home to Maples 918 Tacos & Cantina, Adorn Designs, Cody Mayo Studios, and Hummingbird Fine Craft — are pretty subtle. So subtle, apparently, that it’s not uncommon for folks aiming for Maples to unknowingly stumble into Studio Row’s newest addition, Notes of Marrekesh. And sometimes they stay, as I heard owner Sovana Benis tell one early-afternoon customer last Saturday.

Retro Row
Long Beach
Aug. 23, 2024
For small-business patrons, Long Beach’s 4th Street Corridor (a.k.a. Retro Row) has become the stuff of nightmares, a mass grave of once-beloved enterprises. Before you can draft a review of your new fave spot, its page loads with the disclaimer “Yelpers report this location has closed.” My all-time top falafel, the HipPea, tragically served its final chickpea on my birthday last year. Bustling café Portfolio had already succumbed in 2022 and remains disemboweled today. Like a reaper scything down upstarts by the bootstraps, my neighborhood lost Shady Grove (eclectic BBQ), the Hangout (collective market-space showcasing diverse vendors), VBurger (punk-rock plant-based comfort food), Golden Burgers (classic SoCal American/Mexican/Greek/breakfast diner). Each loss displaced a whole subcommunity of consumers with it.

Summer is about tomatoes, yes, but it is also about sandwiches in the sun. A perfect portable meal, a carby pocket of protein, fats, and if you’re lucky, some crunch and kick. For a fruity fix, but like, make it “healthy,” scoop up a green smoothie and sip that sucker while you congratulate yourself on your moral superiority as demonstrated by such nutritionally based lunch choices.
